NYC with NKOTB (or "Shut up! It's done, isn't it?!")

NYC - Part 1 (or "What the fuck was I thinking?!")
My trip to NYC was something that completely just kinda came together on its own. I say this because of all the places I've said I wanted to visit, New York City wasn't at the top of the list. Hell, it didn't even really make the top ten. I'd always wanted to be in Times Square on New Year's Eve, but that didn't really count as a visit in my book.

So when my NKOTB concerts were over with in early April, I made the comment to some friends "I need another show before summer." I'd heard early on that the guys were going to do the Today Show the first part of May and I knew my girls, Sprinkles & Glennie were planning on going, but I also knew there was just NO way it was an option for me. Aside from the murder factor from my husband, there was the sheer cost of it. Flight, hotel, cab/bus/subway fare, food, etc....there was just *no* way. It wasn't even anything I'd considered. Would it be fun? Of course, but so would the cruise and I wasn't going to do that either. New York wasn't even remotely a blip on my radar.

And then Donnie starts in with his Tweets:
"May 3rd! Boston. May 8th Today Show!!! WTF!!!!!! Get yo asses to the east coast!!!!!"

"May is a big month- Parties, cruise, the Tour and THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY RETURN TO THE TODAY SHOW!!!! Let's all celebrate it together!!!"

"We MUST RAIN DOWN UPON NEW YORK for the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the NKOTB TODAY SHOW reunion!!!!!! GET THERE!!!!!!!! GET TO NEW YORK!!!!!"
"GET TO BOSTON if you can! Get to Miami if you can! GET TO NYC IF YOU GOT AN OUNCE OF BLOOD IN YOUR BODY!!!!!!!!!!"
People- I am bringing 50 FULL SERVICE TOUR tickets to The Today Show!!! Who wants to get a pair???? Come see us!! Don't sleep! ONE YEAR!"
Then Jordan pipes in:
"Sneak peak at the Full Service Tour next friday on the Today Show. Dont just watch....get down there. We need you there. I need you there!!!"

"Please!!!!!!"

"
Donnie's buying show tickets for people there, I will buy plane tickets for those who cant get there. Who wants to come?!!!!"
And NKOTB:
"are you coming to see us in NYC may 8 at the today show?!?! you need to be there. special suprises n prizes just for our fans!"
I make the comment to Sprinkles about needing a show before summer..that I simply wasn't going to last until the end of June without a show. She says "Come to NYC. We'll take careya. (all one word, btw...yes, they really speak that way in Jersey)" Glennie says the same thing. "You fly into Newark and we'll take it from there. We'll figure it all out," they say.

Did I *really* stand a chance? I mean, REALLY? I might as well be Catholic for the guilt I feel sometimes. Besides, Jordan did say please.

Before I knew it, I was convincing my husband that this was a grand idea (I wasn't yet convinced myself, btw....I deserve an OSCAR for my performance in "Desperate Housewife in Need of New Kids") and by week's end, I had e-tickets for the plane and a tentative plan for my trip. Leave Thursday, May 7th, fly into Newark, come home Sunday, May 10th. Flight #....

WAIT.

What the HELL am I doing??!

I hate crowds. My body literally shuts down in new situations. Public transportation? What's that?? I don't ride the bus for God's sake! What in urban HELL was I thinking when I decided I could handle the NYC subway?? Panic attacks, while not all that prevalent in my everyday life, DO still happen. I've lost my mind. That's it! I've lost my ever. Lovin'. Mind.

Shit!

Breathe, Melanie. BREATHE!

Seriously. DawnL, Tara and Tracy all talked to me....or did they talk me down. I'm not sure, really. But bless their hearts, they convinced me that I could handle this trip. I studied those subway maps until I knew them inside out. I bought a $7 laminated map of Manhattan at Borders before I went and studied that, too. Before I went to sleep the night before my trip, I would close my eyes and see the contrasting lines of the streets & subways on the backs of my eyelids. I. Had. This. (Maybe?! EEEEEK!!!!)

NYC - Part 2 (or "I can't friggin' believe I'm actually DOING this!!")
Throughout the week before my trip, I coordinated with my girls who were planning on being there. BoilerFan & DiznyPrincess were both flying in from California Thursday. The Ohio Road Dawgs were driving in sometime Wednesday night. Kavi was talking about being there for the performance Friday. Then of course, my Jersey Girls: Sprinkles & Glennie. When I bought my ticket, I had NO idea whatsoever where I was staying or with whom I was sharing this journey. I just knew that I had a flight in and a flight out. Somewhere there was mention of a shuttle to Jersey. Talk about a hotel stay. Again..no details. Just chatter. (Note to new readers: I don't travel like this. Ever.)

It wasn't until a couple of days before I left that my details were finalized (somewhat..because let's face it: with NK fans, there are no TRUE final details....we ALL fly by the seats of our pants). Thursday night would be spent on the streets, insuring my place in line for the show the following morning. Friday night, I'd stay with the Ohio girls at the Hyatt (yay!! a bed!!) and Saturday, I was taking a bus to Jersey to crash at Sprinkles' house. The rest of the plan was still fuzzy, but at least I knew where I was to lay my pretty Midwestern head each night.

Please notice that NOWHERE in that paragraph did I use the word "sleep." This note will come in handy later.

Wednesday comes and I've studied my ass off. In fact, I'm quite positive I studied the maps harder than I studied my textbooks throughout my entire college career. (My NYC success compared to my college success proves this point, as well.) I've developed a little plan of attack for the things I want to see while I'm there. I've packed my suitcase. I even packed lightly! I managed to get ALL my stuff in just TWO little carry-ons with plenty of room left for souvenirs on my way home. I. ROCK!

I *finally* haul myself to bed about midnight Wednesday night. The alarm goes off (okay..alarms. Plural. There was NO way I was missing my flight!) about 2:30 and I drag from my bed and straight to the shower. Dear Lord, this was NOT the way to start my trip. Shower, shave and a quick dress and I'm ready!! (Nate, btw...not so much.) An hour later? I'm enroute to the airport.

In lieu of a long-tearful-Melly-can't-handle-mushy-goodbyes goodbye, we opt for Nate dropping me off at the door. (MUCH better option than my trip last July when I took the bus to Indianapolis and cried the first hour of my bus ride, btw. MUST remember this for future solo trips.) I plug my driver's license into the kiosk and a few seconds later, I'm on my way with ticket in hand.

Damn! That was easy!!

A relatively quick pass through security (okay, so I forgot to take my belt and jacket off, but hey..nobody had to pull me aside and pat me down. We're already a step ahead of Philly '04, aight?!), a stop for a Coke ($2.50?! WTF!?) at the cafe, a brief wait at the gate and before I know it, I'm settled in on the plane.

Another quick note to self: the 5:10 flight to ANYWHERE rocks. Remember this for future trips.

It's still dark, the plane is only about half-full and I have an ENTIRE row to myself! I dig out the iPod, turn out the light and for one blissful hour, I'm in heaven. Have you ever seen the sunrise from above the clouds? It's the most AMAZING sight. I wish I'd been on the other side of the plane so I could've photographed it. Regardless...it was beautiful. My flight to my Minneapolis connection was blissful. No turbulence. No ear popping. No noise whatsoever, actually. Even the landing was smooth. Yesssssssssssss.................

NYC - Part 3 (or "We're all gonna die in a fiery hell!")
The Minneapolis airport wasn't too bad, though the screen for my gate had me going to Fargo. (Fargo? Really? Who goes to Fargo on purpose, for God's sake?) Obviously a glitch in the system. Within an hour, I'm on my connecting flight and bound for New Jersey.

I spend the next two hours hunkered down in my seat next to a large man (thankfully someone familiar with deoderant) who has me forced to spill myself into the aisle (only to be whacked in the elbow by the drink cart a'la Wedding Singer style). Somehow, I managed to fall asleep for about an hour only to be awoken by a sudden drop in altitude. Nothing like plummeting a thousand feet in your sleep. How I refrained from shouting "OH MY GOD, WE'RE GOING DOWN!!!!" is beyond me, but I somehow managed to bite my tongue. Those around me would no doubt be grateful for my restraint.

I glance out the window and while I don't see smoke or flames, I'm suddenly struck with the realization that the clouds we're soaring above are the same ones we'll have to fly THROUGH in order to land. In my experience clouds = turbulence. Turbulence = fiery crash. Fiery crash = death. NOT in my plan for this weekend, thank you!!

Sure enough...the plane begins lofting from one side to the other. Then we drop a good 5,000 feet in the blink of an eye. Sweet Jesus. We're gonna die! I go white-knuckled as I clench the arms of my seat. Thoughts of "French Kiss" and Meg Ryan's little "I love Paris in the spring" song start going through my head....then, I begin to pray like a maniac, trying to sum all of my sins into a six-second time frame (WOW, did I leave a lot out!), hoping God will accept my all-inclusive "I've sucked as a human being" apology and let me into Heaven after the crash. He does pro-bono work, right?

Apparently God either rejected my confession or he didn't feel like sorting through the mess because we thankfully began our descent into Newark and landed safely (I use that term quite loosely, thankyouverymuch!). Had the jetway floor not been so filthy, I would've kissed it when I stepped off the plane. SOMEBODY at Northwest Airlines is getting a well-versed letter, lemme tell you.

I finally gather my wits and my luggage (though I sense both were stowed in different areas of the plane) and make my way toward the United gate to wait for my girl, Jaceypants, who is due to arrive in about an hour.

Bathroom, tedious handwashing (and yet another squirt of Purell - no pig flu for me, thanks!) and a $10 bagel sandwich later, I gather Jaceypants from her plane and we make our way to ground transport for our shuttle ride to Sprinkles' house in Jersey.

NYC - Part 4 (or "Why the hell do they call this the Garden State?")

Jersey. Is. A. Swamp. Seriously. The humidity is overwhelming and the rain is miserable.

Our shuttle driver obviously learned how to drive by playing Pole Position in the 80's and I'm convinced the plane ride was the safer of these two forms of transportation. We make several stops at the various terminals at the Newark airport and I now know the meaning of "near-miss." I can't BELIEVE he didn't take off mirrors and bumpers as he weaved in and out of stops. My nerves were shot on the plane, so I'm raw at this point and it takes very little to send me into a heart-stopping gasp. I firmly believe our shuttle driver knows this and is a sadistic little bastard. Fortunately, we're on the turnpike before too long and on our way to Sprinkles.

She picks Jaceypants and me up at the shuttle stop and I'm so grateful! I lay my eyes on that precious baby O of hers and my fears from earlier are over. O-Man is a little safe-haven and just one little belly-rub away from Donnie (I'll tell you the story if you're interested). Those big blue eyes look up at me and I realize I have not only survived, but I'm gonna have a BLAST this weekend! I can't WAIT!

We head back to Sprinkles' house to wait for Glennie and the sitter before Mama's Weekend Out commences. Sprinkles has made Jacey and I dinner: an AMAZING baked ziti & fresh bread. SO good!! I shamelessly help myself to two servings. A refresh of the make-up a quick change of clothes and we're ready!!

Glennie arrives shortly before the pizza and the sitter. She shares a "Team Wahlberg" shirt with me (remind me to send thank you's and winning lotto numbers to her as this shirt is GOLD when it comes to turning DEW's eye in NYC!) and I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. I'm really here! This is really happening! OMIGOD!

Of course, we are a bit disappointed by all the damn rain, but Sprinkles assures us that the weather man says it will be gone by 6pm. I hope so because if there's anything worse than sleeping on the streets of NYC, it's sleeping on the streets of NYC in the fuckin' rain.

The sitter arrives about 5:30, some Q&A by this darling little Mary Poppins creature (whom I'm totally kidnapping for myself...shhh, don't tell Sprinkles) about our obsession and we're OFF! Squeeeeee!!!!!!!!

NYC - Part 5 (or "Panic Attack, party of one?")
It set the mood, according to Sprinkles.
(She's really not as sweet n' innocent as she claims, I'm thinkin!)

Sprinkles & Glennie
Jaceypants
With Sprinkles at the wheel, a van load of baked goods (for bribery purposes, of course) and a mission, Jaceypants, Glennie and I are on our way to the big city! Despite some struggles on the Jersey Pike (see? I'm already getting the slang down!), it doesn't take us long to get to the.

What?
What's that?
Oh! "Why'd I stop?"

GOOD DAMN QUESTION!

I asked the same thing as we neared the Lincoln Tunnel. For those who aren't familiar, as you take the pike into the city, there are a series of overpasses right before the Tunnel. As we neared these overpasses, traffic came to a COMPLETE STANDSTILL. On a Thursday night? Seriously? WTF? It took us at least 45 mins to get from that first overpass to the toll booth right before the tunnel. Literally speaking, it's just a little over a mile from the first overpass to the toll booth, but it was complete insanity traffic-wise. I just closed my eyes and prayed for daylight. (Those who know me know I Don't. Do. Traffic.) After some snarky bitch in a U-Haul cut us off (and consequently got yelled at by a cute Guido in an SV on our behalf), we FINALLY made it to the tunnel.
My first view of Manhattan, btw.

Wait.

Tunnel?

As in under-the-fucking-RIVER tunnel?

I. Don't. Think. So.

And so begins the next round of hyperventilation, hot flashes and sweaty palms.

Fortunately, as Sprinkles pointed out - the windows on the van are up. I can't drown.

Ahh, Sprinkles, the eternal optimist.
The light at the end of the tunnel.

Defying gravity, physics and everything natural to my Midwestern mind, I make it through this tunnel with breath to spare. Long enough to lose it again as we pull into Times Square near Port Authority.

Sweet Christ!

WHY are there so many people?!!! And WHY must they walk so close to the van? Get AWAY from us!!! Go! There's a cross walk. USE it!!! EEEEEEEEEEKKKKK!!!!!!!!! Panic sets in. It's over. I'm done. The heart palpitations begin. My palms get sweaty. I can feel my body temperature rise. I begin to sweat and breath shallowly. And the piece d'resistance? Tears. Oh yeah. Streaming down my cheeks. I'm in full-fledged anxiety attack.

NYC - Part 6 (or "Please don't kill me in my sleep for line jumping!")

God bless Jaceypants for consoling me and talking me through my panic attack. I hadn't had one this bad in YEARS and let's just say, thank God I was there for NKOTB because had it been anything less, I honestly think I would've turned around and gone back home. It was *that* bad.

Before long, I was laughing at myself and we were circling the blocks (blinders, baby....blinders. I didn't look ANYWHERE but forward...and UP) until we arrived near Rockefeller Plaza. I say "near" instead of "at" because where we needed to be wasn't really "at" the Plaza. It was on the street about a half a block in the other direction. There were already probably 150 people in line or so (Glennie had kept track via cell with the girls who were waitin' in line for us. Thank God for cell phones!) and from what my friend Heidi'd said, the natives were growing restless with line jumpers. Eeek. I *hate* causing conflict (Shut up. I do.)

Sprinkles pulled up to where our girl Clarita was waiting and Jacey and I jumped out. Horns fired off in impatience as my ass hauled from the backseat, but I managed to NOT flip off anyone in retaliation (yay me!). We nonchalantly walked over and pretended to converse with 'rita until the security guy came over and told us to get in line or move along. So what were we supposed to do? Line jump, of course. (The Brooklyn girls behind us were NOT happy, though I was surprised to hear more guff from their 6 yr old than the adults with her.)
That's our 'rita to the left of the parking meter in the forefront.

We chatted with Clarita for a while and people we were familiar with came and went, each carrying brief conversations. The Ohio Road Dawgs had insured their place quite a bit closer to the front of the line, so we didn't get to chat much with them, but we did visit back and forth as we'd pass from one place to the next. A couple hours later, Boilerfan & Dizny (aka "Cali girls") texted me to let me know they were FINALLY on their way to the Plaza. I dreaded the attitude Miss Thang and her caretakers would fire off at us. (Again - not a fan of conflict.) Sure enough when they arrived...."Umm...how many more people you gonna let in here? First it was two, now four?" I told them very politely "Actually, three of them have VIP, so it's not really that many of us that are actually in line here, once they split out fan pass peeps. It's all good, I promise." Of course, I didn't tell her that the three vips didn't include but one of us, but hey...by then I could TOTALLY make friends with these girls.

As the night went on, some of us split off and walked around the block to see the sights. Sprinkles, Glennie, Jacey & 'rita (aka "VIP girls") invited me to go with them to get a drink. They knew how much I would benefit from a nerve calming concoction. One Tennessee Peach thingie (yes, that's a technical term) later and I was much more relaxed. I wasn't hungry, as my Cali girls had brought me a burger when they arrived, but I did stick around for the chatter (and one DAMN good fried plantain (see my "NYC Firsts" blog). We all laughed and chatted a bit, took some pictures and really enjoyed each other's company. As I've said in other blogs, I don't make friends with other women very easily, so this camaraderie was extremely appreciated and not a second was taken for granted.
I didn't notice until later that mine was the only drink with a pineapple chunk. *snort*

Me with Glennie to the left and Clarita on the right.
Jaceypants & Sprinkles - you can see we're not drunk..just a little sleep-deprived, maybe.
Jaceypants thinkin' she's gonna take a pic of me. LOL
The rest of the night was really quite a blur of details that I know I've forgotten parts of. For that I apologize. I will try to list some that stand out in my mind...

NYC Part 7 (or "I've seen CATS smaller than that sucker!")

For the majority of the night, the VIP girls were in their hotel room and the Cali girls and I were camped out in line. Thankfully they'd had the foresight to bring blankets with them (not that I'd have had the room in my carry-on even if I had remembered) and we weren't too uncomfortable. The three of us did, however, burn through our BB batteries with Twitter updates and texts to friends. My one lesson learned the hard way was not buying one of those battery-powered phone chargers. (This will *NOT* be forgotten next round of concerts, btw.) So...Boilerfan and I found the single available outlet in Manhattan at 3 in the morning and managed to suck a couple bars of electricity from McDonald's. (Oh stuff it Ronald, like it REALLY costs you $2.59 for a 32oz Coke. Throw me a bone here!) We had fun people-watching and bonded well (again with the girlfriend thing. SO super cool!!).
Now keep in mind, people were stopping alllllll night long asking us questions about who we were waiting for...what we were doing, etc. After a while we just started fucking with people. "Metallica!" "Fleetwood Mac!" "Grateful Dead" were common responses by those around us. (We're nothing if not a creative bunch!) We got a variety of responses when we told them the truth, though: "Didn't they break up?" "Wow, I didn't know they were still together." "Ha! Have fun with that." And a variety of nasal-based noises were added by those who thought we were ridiculous. At one point, an obvious New Yawker (the accent, hello?!) stopped long enough to carry on a conversation with us and the Brooklyn girls. He was actually pretty entertaining, choosing favorites in the group - tormented by Miss Thang when he picked HER favorite...then ridiculed again for picking the "ugliest" of the group.
A pic Boilerfan discretely shot with her BB of our New Yawkah.
Poor Anthony Gambino just couldn't win. No. I'm not making that up. Nor am I making up the fact that he flirted shamelessly with me. Figures....if any of us could pick up a NY Native (not to mention one with a crime family name, no less), it would be me. All in all, it really wasn't too bad a night, despite the no sleep thing. Oh, and the roach who was bigger than most housecats who decided to pay us a couple visits.

*shudder*

At some point, Mr Dizny (a bucket of fun, I might add!) joined us and he took the Cali girls back to their hotel to get cleaned up, changed and recharged (not just battery-speaking) before the show. Shortly thereafter, our VIP girls showed up again, since sleep wasn't had. Apparently whether you're literally laying on the streets of NYC or laying on Egyptian cotton sheets in a $200 a night hotel room a few blocks away, sleep is overrated where NKOTB are concerned. Of course, to their defense, they *were* staying at the same hotel as the guys. I don't know I could've slept either, truth be told. I was content to rest my legs by sprawling out beneath the street light for about an hour somewhere around 3am.
With one final trip to the McD's bathroom (and no. I didn't buy anything this time. I'm still pissed about that Coke, Mayor McCheese!), we were set for the rest of the night/morning...Jesus is that REALLY the sun coming up?! By now, the VIPs have begun lining up on the OTHER side of the Plaza and our spot in line has moved up CONSIDERABLY. The tension with the Brooklyn girls has now diminished and we've actually made friends with them (told you so). Despite no sleep, we have actually done quite well and apparently reached our second (third? fourth?) wind. At this point, we are ready for the show. Of course, we're HOURS away, according to Jordan's tweet last night stating the weren't performing until 8:45. Uggh.
Fortunately, just as I start getting impatient, my Twitter friend, Shayminn (Ooh! Shameless plug!! http://www.myspace.com/shaymin) had arrived after driving up from Boston. Now...my heart belongs to NKOTB and my husband (not necessarily in that order)...but I tell you what, Shayminn gives some DAMN good hugs! I didn't think he was gonna let me go! (Not to mention he smells SUPAH good!) It was really cool getting to meet him and talk to him in person considering how much we've chatted on Twitter. Of course, Mister Security Guard comes by and tells him to move along, so he went to get his place in line...which has quickly filled back up to where it was before they split out the VIPs. I'm pretty surprised at how many people actually got there so close to showtime. While there were quite a few people in front of us in line, I was very grateful to have gotten there when we did. I wouldn't want to be stuck so far in the back like these slackers were!

We kill probably another hour before we notice some bright production-style lights come out of the plaza in front of us. What the he...
Oh.

My.

GOD!

NYC Part 8 (or I slept on the pavement and here I am, hugging a guy in an Armani suit)

There they are.

Holy crap!

(insert peals of fangirl screams)

Ooh..wait. Where are they going?
Damn!!
VIP line!

This sucks. Oh well...not like I expected any FaceTime anyway, right?

Wait. Are those lights coming closer?

(more peals of fangirl screams)

OMG! They are coming over here!!!
I slept on the street last night. Well, I didn't even sleep. I laid on the street last night. Dirty. Filthy. Concrete. That was after I spent 12 hours traveling from Iowa to New York. I look like death. I probably smell like it, too and what's happening? The five hottest men on the planet are making their way toward me right now. This is like getting into a car accident without having on clean underwear.

I'm DYING here!!!

Pushy people start line jumping and I break away from my dream-come-true to reality for a brief second to shriek at the woman shoving her DD's into my back trying to get closer to "JOEY JOE! OMG! JOEY JOE!" Seriously? A 36-yr old man probably no longer refers to himself by his 14 yr old nickname, but thanks for screaming it repeatedly in my ear. I stand my ground..as do my girls..and we're RIGHT at the fence as they come up. Of course, we've been shoved forward and to the side a little bit, but we're still here.

And there. is. Jordan.
He gets to where we're at and stops. Starts talking to us like we're long-lost friends. "So...who's goin' to Jones Beach??" I shake my head and frown..."Nah...I'm from Iowa...it's just not a possibility for me."

"Iowa, huh? Wow..that's a long ways!" he says.

The girls behind us say (in their thick Brooklyn accents, I might add) "We'd love to, but we can't afford tickets for all three of us." He turns around, motions to his bodyguard and spins back around..."KA-BAM! You're goin' to JONES BEACH!" They're *SO* excited!! I'm happy for them, too. Bummed, obviously that I won't be going, but super excited for them.

I ask Jordan.."Can I get a hug since I'm not going to Jones Beach?"
He answers, "Absolutely!! C'meah!" (DYING!! GAH!)

And he hugs me....and rubs my back a little bit while he squeezes. I've never been a Jordan girl. EVER. He's got a great body and the boy can sing and dance, but he's just never tripped my trigger. But I have to say...he definitely pled his case via that hug. WOW!

Mmm. Oooh..who's next?
OOH!! JOE.
Ol' Blue Eyes!
Evil Genius...Hottie MacBooty Tractah.
I could be in trouble here.

Wait. I survived the MacStare in Des Moines, didn't I? Yes! I did! I can do it agai......*gasp*
FYI? There is NO surviving THAT.

Now..keep in mind, this boy has been sending TwitPics of himself in BED...in his underwear sitting poolside....close-ups of his wonky eyebrows while giving us that MacStare.I had FULLY intended to chew him out for trying to sway me from Team Wahlberg. But he looked at me and I lost all function in my brain. Somehow I was able to mutter "Can I get a picture with you, Joe?" To which he replied, "Of couahse!" and put his arm around me.
And what happens? Somebody distracts Joe and somebody walks DIRECTLY between us and the camera. Grr! (But that is TOTALLY his arm around me!! GAH!!) He squeezes my shoulder and hugs me in to his side. I melt.

le sigh.

There he goes..

Who's next?? OOH! Danny!! Click. Click. Click. Click. For my daughter, who's madly in love with Danny. She's gonna KILL me for being so close to him without her. He's talking to everybody around me and I don't want to interrupt (not to mention, Little One would KILL me if I get a hug without her here), so I just smile and keep snapping pictures.
I keep watching for Jon and Donnie, but Jon's long since disappeared and since the cops & security have yelled at us several times to back up, I can't blame him. I wouldn't want to be in that chaos with just a 'caution' tape blocking me from certain sexual assault either. Donnie, of course, is snagged up by some "women of questionable reptuation," shall we say? and makes it no further down the line. He's such a man, like that. Lucky for him, I love him. Sooner than we realize, the guys are on their way back for sound check.

I seriously just hugged a guy in a suit that probably cost more than I make in a year and I look like *THIS?!* I am in the dictionary next to "Murphy's Law."

NYC Part 9 (or "If only I weren't a Pygmie!")
We're finally herded into the Plaza in time for sound check. I can't believe I'm standing here in New York City at the Today Show watching my favorite group of all time. I used to DREAM about moments like this!! I used to watch chicks like me on TV and wonder to myself "How do I get to do THAT?!" I'm here!! (excuse me while I get a tissue. Cuz seriously? This rocks.)

Of course, its crowded, so we're hot as hell, but the minute the guys come out, we lose our minds! Screams, shrieks and cries of excitement are deafening, but worth every second. Of course, I can't see much, so I've got my camera over my head and I'm snapping pictures like a maniac. I have no clue what I'm shooting or if they're in focus, of course, so I have to lower my camera back down after every shot and hope I can duplicate the good ones.

Fresh out of the gate, though, I nail THIS little gem. I didn't even realize I got it until I got home and uploaded my pics:
And look! Another little beauty!!
However...the next sixgazillion pictures are either this:
or this:
I do, however manage to get a few blurry shots of sound check.
I won't bore you with the details of the dumbasses next to us (mind you, in the MIDDLE of the crowd) shouting "Bring it to the BACK!" every chance they got whenever anybody up front got anything (posters, styrofoam microphones, leis, Jabbawockeez scarves..or GOD Forbid, FaceTime!). I'll also spare you the insignificant things like how short Meredith Viera really is or how perky Hota Kotb is (or how if you added an N to her last name, she'd be Hota NKOTB..lol).

Sound check ended with a stare down.
I made the first strike, but as I've been told, it went in for the kill as the show went live. (If anybody has footage, I'd LOVE to see it!)

NYC Part 10 (or "OMG, they're wearing JABB masks!!")
Really? What can I say about the actual taping that you can't see on the clips? The show was great! They came out wearing Jabbawockeez masks. Now normally, I'm NOT big on masks, makeup or anything circusy/clown related, but lemme just say - I could DIG those Jabb masks! They sang three songs: Hangin' Tough, Call It What You Want and Dirty Dancing. The crowd was hoppin', but with the sheer number of people, the fact that we were between two pretty big buildings and the whole purpose of the sound being focused for the tv show aspect, the sound wasn't great. We could hear the songs, but none of their talking or interview parts. A bit disappointing, but it didn't matter in the long run.

Apparently, when the camera came on, the first person some of my friends saw was me. I was smilin' and yukkin' it up like all the other crazies, so I'm not sure how they could tell it was me (I still haven't seen the footage of it, myself), but I did spy myself in the crowd from the YouTube clips. That's me holding my camera up high above my head (which is pretty much how I spent the whole show). Ahh, good times!
Within a couple hours from the time we entered the plaza, it was all over. Eight hours travel time, almost twelve hours on the street....and it was over. You'd think I'd be sad, but really? I was floating SO high, I couldn't stop smiling.

BoilerFan, Dizny and I almost instantly ran into Kavi as we were exiting the Plaza and then she ran into a couple girls she was supposed to meet too, so we headed to Dean & Deluca's for a drink (I was TOTALLY parched!!) and a cupcake.

Some other footage:

NYC Part 11 (or "A Plan of Attack")
Before we hit D&D's, I got to talk to Shayminn again..even convinced him to pose with me. SUCH a doll. Truly? This guy is GOING places musically. SO completely talented and so very down to earth. If you don't know him, GET to know him. He's dripping with talent, he's level-headed and VERY real. Not once did I feel like a "fan" to him. Family...right from the first text I sent him. Amazing guy!!
Dean & DeLuca's was surprisingly not very busy considering it was right on the Plaza, but it did take us a few minutes to get through the line. A water, a tea and a chocolate cupcake with sprinkles for me, please? BoilerFan will take Red Velvet and Kavi'll have a "Hostess" cupcake.BoilerFan, Dizny, me, Kavi and her two girls all sat down to relax and plot our day out a little bit. Kavi's girls needed to head to Port Authority and meet another friend...BoilerFan & Dizny wanted to head back to the hotel and rest a little bit. I *had* to tackle the city head-on as soon as possible or I wouldn't get to see a thing. Kavi was a free agent and up for whatever and since she'd been to NYC before, I kidnapped her and dragged her with me. (Okay, she TOTALLY volunteered and that woman deserves a medal for bravery!) First stop would be my Jersey girls' hotel to pick up my luggage, then to the Hyatt where Heidi & the Ohio RoadDawgs were staying (and where I'd stay that night) so I could get cleaned up a little (Me? Sweaty. Mess.). From there, we'd meet up with BoilerFan & Dizny again for a late lunch and off to see the rest of the sights of NYC.

So Kavi and I head toward Times Square armed with a map and the determination to find the hotel without getting lost. We talked the whole time, really developing a great camaraderie. As we wandered, we began to joke "Wouldn't it be funny if we got to the hotel and the guys were there??" Gah..what a happy thought! Then, of course, I thought about how wretched I still looked and secretly wished I could get a shower that very second...because it really WOULD be my luck to run into them looking like this.

A couple of brief "whoops...you're right, it's that way"s we finally spy the hotel. YAY!! I'm one stop away from a shower!!

What the.....
I know that face. And wherever HE is....THEY are.

Told you it was just my luck.

NYC - Part 12 (or "I will not swallow my tongue. I will not swallow my tongue. I will not swallow my tongue.")
THAT is Armando. He's their head of security. I know that face. :) Of course, the small throng of women sorta gave it away, too, but hey. I was focused! So Kavi and I decide to be good girls...and kinda hang out outside. Since technically, we're NOT guests of the hotel we felt weird just waltzing in like we were. We called Glen to see if she'd come down and get us. She said she'd be down, so we waited...chit-chatted a little bit. I asked the girls around us..."what's up?" "who's comin' down?" Words like "Donnie" and "Wahlberg" floated freely.

(fangirl squeals here)

So, we're standing there and, of course, I have my camera out and ready to go...and from the side of me, I hear "You were in Kansas City, weren't you?!"

Okay..at this point two things floated into my brain:
1) Do I have a stalker?
2) Who did I piss off in KC that they remember me six months later??!

I look over and there's a gal holding a Jordan sign. It's not one I instantly recognize, so I hesitantly reply..."Umm...yeah. Did I meet you there?" She says, "Well, sorta not really. You took a picture of Jon & Jordan on the bus and Jon was pointing at my sign...I'm the Tractah Mechanic!" and she flips the sign over...
"OH YEAH!!!! I remember! It's good to finally meet you!" I respond..and my first thought?? *I* was recognized in NYC for my photography. Yes, apparently I AM that unashamedly vain. LOL

So anyway...we go on about our way...and Clarita calls us to let us know they're inside the lobby and to come on in. So we part the crowd and in we stroll. (Yes, apparently we DO own the place, thank you!) My Jersey girls are perched on some chairs off to the right and I beeline for my bag that has deoderant and perfume..I also freshen up with a powder & a fresh coat of lipstick. Yes, right there in the hotel lobby. I don't have TIME to find a bathroom. My man is coming down soon!

OOOH! Gum...MUST. Find. GUM! Whew.

So we're chillin'....taking some pics with one another. Chatting about how Sprinkles MUST sit in the chair and NOT go to Donnie (Hubby's only rule...she CAN'T seek HIM out). Too funny! So, she's sans her "Team Wahlberg" shirt and hunkered down in the chair farthest from the center of the lobby like a good girl. They proceed to tell us that Donnie came out into the crowd at the Today show and made a beeline for Glennie when he saw her "Team Wahlberg" shirt. He commented on the shirts and gave everybody hugs...and proceeded to record her on his little video camera thing. When he asked her to spell her name, she couldn't remember how!! LOL (I wouldn't have either, babe..no worries!) She asked what he was recording for...and he said "Well...I don't have any tickets on me, so I'm getting your name & address so I can add you to the Will Call list. You're goin' to Jones Beach, baby!" (I think it was at this point that she lost her mind. LOL) All four of my Jersey girls got Jones Beach tickets...so excited for them!!!

Here's me & Kavi:
We wait another 20 minutes or so and sure enough, our boy's true to his word....
There's Donnie. Fuckin'. Wahlberg.
I actually do QUITE well at waiting my turn and being patient for him to get to us. I can see, though, that he's so tired...and all he really wants to do. Why am I standing here..taking up another two minutes of his time?? Because if it isn't me, it'll be some other fan. And besides...how can you pass that face up?? He took a picture with Kavi by herself....then he got all of us girls from "Team Wahlberg" lined up and we took a group shot. The first of which wasn't that great of us girls because we were trying to tell Kavi how to use my camera...but hey, DEW looked good!
We get things figured out and she takes another one. Awww...perfect!
He looked around, counted us and said "wait....we're missing one..." and Glennie explained Sprinkles' "rule" about the chair. So what does our boy, do?? Parts through the crowd, strolls over to the chair and gives that well-behaved woman a hug and a kiss on the cheek! Couldn't you just DIE???? Then he says to Glennie "So we need what...(counting)...5 tickets for Jones Beach? They'll be at Will Call for you, ladies!"

Wait. WHAT?? Did he just invite ME to join the rest of the girls at Jones Beach??!!!! Processing this thought as he looks right at me...(GAH!) My mind clicks into gear and I hand him something that I'd made for him and forgot to give him in DSM (Sorry, girls...some things are just NOT for public viewing!)...he grins, tucks it in his front pocket and says "Thank you!!" He gives me a hug and kisses my cheek...and says "I gotta go see my boys, baby." (double GAH!!) And off he went.

It's at this point in time that I tear up. Donnie Wahlberg Face Time? TWICE in one LIFE?? Are you kidding? This sort of thing doesn't happen to me! Bless JaceyPants...she tells me to sit down so I can get my wits about me(keep in mind, I'm already on edge emotionally because I literally haven't slept in over 36 hours). I'm in awe of everything that's happened today and I can hardly wrap my mind around it all. I finally catch my breath again and I watch Donnie with his fans...which is one of the most amazing things to see. He's one of the most devoted celebrities...exhausted, rushed and in-high-demand and he still stops for every single person in the line...takes pictures, gives hugs. He's SO there for us. It's really no wonder why he never sleeps - he's too busy hugging and kissing and taking pictures and signing autographs and making our days memorable. I know there are many who aren't fans of NKOTB, and that's fine. We're all entitled to our opinions. But you do have to respect a man who's there for his fans like that. *sniffle*

I somehow gather myself and notice that Fish, the guy's guitarist is standing over by the door with his wife. Glennie's talking to him and I decide to join them. I waited my turn and told him how much I appreciate the hard work he does for the guys and how lucky they are to have such talented musicians behind them every night. I ask him for a pic, to which he cheerfully obliges. I even got a hug. Fish is a total sweetheart...in fact, they all really are.

NYC - Part 13 (or "Not like you'll read the rest anyway!")
As it's taken me over a month to complete these first twelve parts, I know that it's somewhat pointless to continue with a step by step, detailed account of the rest of my weekend in NYC.

Suffice it to say, there were amazing sights that I saw, things I did and experiences I will only have that ONE time in my life. I'll post more pictures and I may share bits and pieces later on, but for now, this ends my NYC blog.

What do I take away from this trip? Memories of the most amazing experience of my life, thus far, as an adult woman.

I've spent my life being someone's wife or mother, someone's sister, someone's aunt, someone's employee, someone's something. When it really boils down to it, until last year, I really hadn't done anything that was solely for my benefit. I've pretty much lived my life for others, at least I've tried to. I try to put their needs before my own and as a wife and mother, that's what we're supposed to do. It's not that I harbor resentment or hold grudges for those things. I truly enjoy doing it. But until last year, I realized that I truly had no identity as myself. As my children enter their teen years, that's a dangerous place to be.

So last year, when I went to Colorado to visit Crisillyus for a week, that was my first step to rediscovering myself. I had a week to myself without familial responsibilities, no deadlines, no responsibilities and God bless her, Silly let me do whatever I want to, when I wanted to do it. If I wanted to sleep the day away, she let me! If I wanted to drive to friggin' Estes Park to see a haunted hotel, we did it! That vacation was such an eye-opening experience for me. I realized that I WAS still somewhere inside of myself. I hadn't lost my identity...I just hid her really well.

A second solo vacation came in July when I went to Indianapolis & Louisville with friends I'd met online to do a paranormal investigation. Again...totally to myself, very few responsibilities and a deeper sense of myself when the time was done.

November brought criSILLYus and RiceChex and I together as a unit as we traveled to Kansas City on the first leg of what's becoming the most AMAZING journey of my life. RiceChex and I left our husbands and children at home and the three of us were carefree and did exactly what we wanted to do, when we wanted to do it. It was the greatest time I've ever had with friends.

So when this opportunity came about to do this NYC trip, as scared as I was, I knew I NEEDED this trip. Not to see the guys...not to relive some teenage fantasy...but to continue discovering who I am and what my purpose is. I spent the weekend shooting pictures and laughing with friends...building relationships with beautiful, talented, smart, brilliant women....one of them being myself. I am here and I love what I've learned about myself. Because of this self-discovery, I'll be able to let myself dream again. I'll write. I'll make more friends. I'll stoke the fire beneath old friendships. I'll love freely and cut toxic relationships out. I'll sing and dance and I'll take pictures. I'll be more true to myself, consequences be damned!

My son (whom you may know I've had an extremely tense relationship with, as of late) kept commenting in the days following my trip "Mom, you seem really different. I can't really explain it...You're just way different." He's right. I am different! How sad that it took almost 15 years for him to see his mother as an individual!

So, it seems that the stowaway in my luggage as I landed in Des Moines on my return flight was me. And damn, I'm glad to be back!!

NYC - Part 14 (or "You didn't REALLY think that was the last one, did you?")

When I said I was stopping there, I lied. Okay, I didn't lie, but I wanted to put a separate message to the women I spent my weekend with. Without you, my experience would not have been the same. Never forget what unbelievable women you are.

Sprinkles:
You beautiful, darling, generous woman....you were the reason I even considered NY a possibility in the first place. You opened your home and your family to me and for that gift, I will forever be grateful! You're the model of what I could only hope to be. Your family is so blessed to have you.

Glennie:
Girl...you just crazy! You teach me something new every day and I wish we'd had more time together to laugh and play. I swear we were separated at birth...you know, if I was a black woman from Jerze. HA! Seriously though, you bring a smile to my face every time I talk to you and I love you for it.

JaceyPants:
LET's GET THIS! For never really having spoke before I met you in the bowels of hell (aka Newark Airport), I'm so grateful for our friendship! I can't thank you enough for taking such good care of me and making sure I wasn't going to drop from exhaustion or Wahlbergization. You're a gem, babe!! Can't WAIT to see you again!

Clarita:
For taking pity on this poor, clueless white girl from the Midwest, you deserve riches beyond what this world will give you. Making sure I knew where I was going and even how much to tip a cabbie for a $5 taxi ride, you're my NY Go-To girl! God bless you, darlin!!

Kavi:
I've never been able to forge friendships with women easily. Throw in cultural and educational differences such as the ones between us and it's damn near impossible, but after having spent the day with you seeing what New York had to show me, I consider you so much more than a friend to me. You were so patient and as excited as I was to do the amazing things we did. I'm brought to tears by your kindness and friendship. You...are.....priceless.

BoilerFan:
For late night laughs, putting up with my crazy sense of humor and a thousand other things I know I do that probably made you wanna run BACK to California, I thank you. You kept me company, kept me safe, kept me fed and kept me in stitches. If I could choose a sister, you'd be right there...faceless and all. LOL! Thank you so much for everything. Let's do this again!

Heidi & Summer:
You crazy Cleveland Girls!! I give you grief and tease you unmercifully for your lack of Face Time and your ga-ga-ness with your love for the guys, but when it boils down to it, I am so envious of your relationship. To be able to share something like this with a real sister would be the only thing to make this experience better. Thank you for allowing me a glimpse into your lives (laughs, fights and all) and letting me share in this with you. Cleveland ROCKS!

For all the women I shared moments with while in that incredible city, I thank you. Each of you touched me in some small way and I will be forever different because of your impact. When Joe wrote "5 Brothers and a Million Sisters," he was talking about us. There's just no other way to describe it. I love each of you from the very bottom of my heart and I will never forget you regardless of where this journey takes us or when it ends.

But no matter what, we'll always have 48th & Rockefeller.

Your ice cream is cold. What are you gonna do?

Are you gonna bitch? By the sounds of the boards and Twitter, I think some of you would!

What is with ALL the complaining about everything NK related lately?

Really? I mean seriously?? THIS is how you want to be known? The perpetually p*ssed off fan?

Some people get face time. Some don't.
Some people go to a lot of shows. Some don't.
Some people went on the cruise. Some didn't.
Some states will get to see the guys this summer. Some won't.
Some are given backstage & VIP. Some aren't.
THIS is LIFE. It's not our RIGHT to have these things. It's a privilege.

GET A GRIP!

We are owed absolutely NOTHING by these guys.
NOTHING!

Now, please don't jump all over me telling me that I'm overreacting ...that you're just bummed about a cancellation or a "so-close-but-not-quite" face time experience. I am in complete agreement that things like that happen. I've had it happen, myself. I totally understand it. We've all been disappointed from time to time. I'm talking about those fans who aren't happy no matter WHAT happens. No matter how many shows they see, how many times they've gotten to meet them, have pictures taken, get autographs, etc....they complain.

If you fall into that category, you need to evaluate why you're here and what you want out of this experience.

Every second these guys are here. Every song. Every smile. Every autograph. Every Tweet. Every blog. Every video. Every concert. Every cruise. Every picture. Every single breath they take that involves us.....is a gift.

Let's not forget that, please??

One in a Million

While on their European Tour, Joe traded in his "Stay the Same" solo for a medley of songs he'd done back in the day: "I Remember When," "Where Do I Go From Here" and a new, catchy little tune declaring his thanks that sounded similar to something he'd done on his solo album, but not quite. Then we heard the words "Five brothers and a million sisters" tossed in there and I remember my heart cinching up and I cried.

He considers us sisters. Seriously? I hate using the term "awesome" in this respect because it's so overused, but really...it's awesome.

He doesn't even have the understanding like us "sisters" have when it comes to this thing. And it's so much bigger now than it EVER was back in the day. We couldn't have understood it then. We couldn't have embraced it then. We couldn't have contributed anything to it then like we can (and do) now.

criSILLYus and RiceChex have been next to me through this whole thing. We laid claim to which boy was ours early in the game. RiceChex and I were the ones to drive to Kansas City in 1994 to see them as one last tribute to our youth. We didn't know at the time it would be their farewell tour. The years the followed were difficult, as the guys had been our entire lives. Their music, their faces...everything about them. Obviously, we moved on - went to college, got married, had kids and never once expected them to reunite. They all had their own lives now, too. Careers, marriage, kids. Completely separate identities from who they'd once been.

Then, out of NO where, they were back.

Life as we knew it ceased to exist. Our fantasy worlds returned (much to our husbands' chagrin) and we were again caught up in the music, the faces and thank to the internet, we were connected with women (and a few guys) from around the world who shared this interest with us. How unbelievably AWESOME this was!

The guys were caught off guard by how successful they were. I know they were. They've said as much in interviews. But the fans?? My God, we had NO idea what this reunion would bring us. Sure, we got in touch with old friends again, but we hadn't the first glimpse of what was to become this "million sisters" thing.

Thanks to the community forums on the nkotb.com website, we fans were thrust into a world filled with people who shared this same obsession...this same "to hell with our regular lives...let's ride this ride for as long as it lasts" mantra. As friendships developed around the globe, we really began to understand this sisterhood thing. A real sisterhood. I've got a sister, but she and I don't share a sisterhood. We just don't "get" each other. These girls GET me, and I them.

In the last year, I've developed close friendships with women in California, Washington, Oregon, Virginia, Florida, New Jersey, Maine, Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois and probably half a dozen other states that have escaped me at this moment. We stay up until all hours of the night talking, tweeting, chatting, posting, texting....I've come to love these women and they're such a vital part of my everyday life now. It's almost indescribable. I guess if you're not amidst it, you just can't understand it.

So, my darling husband, for as much as you're irritated with the guys for this reunion, this really isn't about them. They lit the fire, don't get me wrong...but when it boils down to it, it's these women who fan the flame. I love them so much and I will forever be grateful to NKOTB for having timed this so perfectly....for bringing us together the way they have. We really are five brothers and a million sisters.

Just how twisted am I?

Let's face it, these guys have made us absolutely insane. You've got soccer moms dressing up in full goth and dancing around their living rooms. Why? Because Donnie asked us to. Twitter has absolutely exploded with an influx of thousands of new users? Why? Because NKOTB & each individual guy now have Twitter accounts. We've crashed site after site on the web when concerts go on sale, when new details are released for something the guys are doing or when they pretty much breathe. Seriously. What is the MATTER with us???

I should start at the beginning of where the conductor punched my ticket for the crazy train.

I surprised myself last May when tickets went on sale for the fall tour. Due to a misunderstanding (as we weren't yet on the forums), we thought REGULAR tickets were $375 and balcony seats were $175 and we were totally willing to pay it to see the guys again. Obviously we realized our mistake when all the tickets went on sale and we were VERY relieved that regular tickets were well under $100. Whew! Still...we'd have paid it.

The summer went along fairly quietly. Not much insanity, other than the countdowns and the numerous daily emails between myself and mah girls talking about the guys, sharing YouTube links and discussing concert plans.

We bought tickets to the Kansas City show. They were balcony seats and while we did plan to go early, in the hopes of seeing the guys, we didn't get to. Here's where "questionable" enters the picture. We'd NEVER considered waiting outside the arena after a show, but something told us (okay..I blame the Waffle House video) to hang out and see where they go. So, while Kimmi sat toastily in the car, Jen and I sat outside in 40° weather, spitting rain and a brisk breeze, on the curb with my camera (and a killer zoom lens) across the street from the venue, shouting "I LOVE YOU's" at Joe and Jon. (I apologize, guys. I told you: CRAZY!) We froze our butts off in that rain, but we were SO excited at the great pictures and the waves and blown kisses we got from Jon, Donnie & Jordan. Thus began talk of "Stalkfest '09" before we even knew if they were still going to be performing in '09!! Hubby was NOT pleased with our promises of a three city tour in the summer. Crazy faded in and out for a couple weeks.

Then, we discovered the forums. Ho. Ly. Hell. Life hasn't been the same. I've found myself on the forums sometimes up to 18, 24, even 36 hour stretches reading all I can, right-click-saving, soaking as much of this in as I possibly can. Thankfully the holidays were in there and I smartened up and realized I don't need to be here all the time, reading every thread to keep up. Word spreads quickly as to what's going on, so I've lightened up quite a bit.

Holidays over, the cruise announcement was made. It was at this point I realized there were some people who were off-the-charts-NUTSO slightly crazier than I and being on that boat with them was NOT a smart place for me to be. I'm far too snarky and outspoken for that situation to turn out well. I'd be likely to start throwing people overboard or chucking fruit at people. LOL! I did, for one BRIEF moment consider it, but logic overruled obsession.

Enter: spring concerts. DES MOINES??!! MOLINE?!?!?!?! OH EM GEE! SO there. Hubby wasn't thrilled with the travel plans, especially considering he knew there was still a summer tour to look forward to. When I reminded him this thing wouldn't last forever, he just rolled his eyes and said "I'm not paying for it." HA! No problem! Fast-forward to April - Moline's show. Again with the rain and the 40° temps. Take that 2 hr wait from Kansas City last fall and multiply it times FOUR. That's how long we stood out in that miserable weather hoping for a glimpse of our guys. Wet to the core, freezing cold, we finally gave up about 5:00 and went to get dinner. What we hadn't really counted on was our abrupt decision to drive to Columbus the next day. Being from Iowa..that's QUITE the haul. We'd gotten some inside info from a friend that they were staying in Chicago the night of the Moline show, so we decided, last minute, to drive to Chicago (three hours away, I might add). First dose of really out-of-character for us. So...at 3 in the morning, my girl Jen and I rolled into the Windy City. (We got the big fat "IDONTFRIGGINTHINKSO" from Jen's hubby on Columbus, so we turned around and came home.)

It was a bust. No face time. But..we had a GREAT time anyway, slept in the most comfortable bed on the planet AND we didn't have to deal with our "real lives" for a day. Woo!!

Des Moines was a few days later and we'd learned our lesson about cold weather and the likelihood of the guys coming out in miserable conditions, so we didn't venture down to the arena til later in the day. We DID get Face Time this time around. Yay us! But really...crazy wasn't too much of an issue for that show.

Unfortunately, within 48 hrs, I started experiencing that ever-common "Post Concert Depression." I couldn't listen to their songs, I couldn't get on the site. I couldn't even edit my pictures without feeling blue. I had to go to another show. It wasn't a matter of WANT...I NEEDED another concert. I swear, if I'd been left alone much longer, I'd have started to twitch. But there were no shows left for me. I didn't have a passport, so Canada wasn't an option and California airfare & hotel was too expensive to even consider. It was a couple weeks before I finally came out of the haze of depression and was able to do anything New Kid-related again. I believe Twitter was to thank for that recovery. The guys started Tweeting and giving us glimpses into their lives (and their beds, thankyouOHsoVERYmuchJOEandJON!) and I was able to get through it.

Somewhere during the haze, the Today show appearance was announced. Obviously, Iowa is NO where close to NYC, so I hadn't even considered it. I was super excited for my friends who were going, but I knew it wasn't an option for me. First of all, I'm highly uncomfortable in new places, much less somewhere as big as New York City! Also..I know NOBODY in NY and knew I'd never find my way around by myself (my girl Jen is busy that weekend) and I wasn't about to go alone. That's just *NOT* me.

Along comes my little twitter friend, Susie. (Stop batting your eyelashes, girl...you're not so innocent!! LOL) "Mel, you should come to NYC! You could stay with us, here's an email address to request passes. C'mon!! We'll take care of ya!" Gah...are you kidding? Okay, fine. I'll check airfare, but I know it'll be astronomical. So off I go to travelocity.com. Less than $300?? Out of DES MOINES??? NO freakin' WAY! They're NEVER this cheap. Still, I wasn't holding my breath. A LOT of things had to work out perfectly in order for this to come together. I knew hubby wouldn't go for it. Too expensive. Too unsafe. Too over-the-top. Too...too...too.... I decide to bring it up in one of those off-handed ways that I'm famous for -
"So...May 7th-10th. What do we have going on?"
"Umm...nothing. Why?"
"Just curious."
Fast-forward a couple hours. "Hey...you know that weekend in May? The Jersey girls invited me to go to the Today show with them." (At this point, I still have not mentioned THEY are going to be on it.)
"Uhhh okay. Why would you want to g........oh!!! Of course. New Kids. (insert the "I'm so OVER this" sigh) How much is THIS gonna cost me?"
"Well, I actually checked airfare and it's less than $300 to fly out of DES MOINES (this, btw, is UNHEARD of. DSM is the most expensive airport on the planet)."
"Hmm..where you staying? How much will you be spending on ...."
I rattle off some figures.
"Well, if the tax return comes, I don't care what you do with your half."

Holy crap! Did he just say yes??

I'm fairly certain for a brief moment in time, the earth stopped spinning. First off, he's SUPER protective of me and the fact that I'm considering running...err...jetting off to NYC with people I've NEVER met is just insane to him. Secondly, this would be the second out of FOUR trips I'll be making solo this year to various cities across the country (Chicago and Denver are still to come for concerts this summer). Thirdly, did I mention, he's super protective?

So I talk to my girls...and this morning, I bought my plane ticket. I'm actually going to New York City without a plan, without a clue, without even a map of the city. I'm *so* screwed. LOL (Okay, I'm really not...my east coast girls have promised to take VERY good care of me and I trust them implicitly)

I think I crossed from "enthusiastic" to "crazy" when I clicked on the "book flight" button this morning. What in the hell am I thinking?!?!?!

I. Have. Lost. It.

5 Brothers & a Million Sisters

5 brothers and a million sisters

Friday afternoon in Bostontown-
still know my way around.
Tryin’ ‘a find the rehearsal spot for
the reunion of the ‘kids on the block.

Gonna rip it like we used to do.
Good to be back chillin’ with the crew.
Don’t know how its gonna be, but
last time we made history.

So tell ya mother and ya sistah too,
the New Kids are coming back for you.
And in my heart I knew you’d never forget,
but to see you again like this
makes me feel like I’ll never be alone.

Wherever it is I’m goin’ to, whatever I am
is because of you and I thank you. And I thank you.
5 BROTHERS AND A MILLION SISTERS-
didn’t know how much I missed you.
Thank you. And I thank you.

All the way back and all the way up tonight.
Call it what you want, but I’ll call it love tonight.
Some people said we couldn’t do it again,
but the New Kids had the last word in the end.

See what happens when you follow your dreams?
See what happens when you just believe?
The whole world opens up her arms.
Everything is easy that used to be hard.

So tell ya mother that I lover her too
and don’t you know we did it all for you, cuz
in my heart I knew you’d never forget,
but to see you again like this
makes me feel like I’ll never be alone.

Wherever it is I’m goin’ to, whatever I am
is because of you and I thank you. And I thank you.
5 BROTHERS AND A MILLION SISTERS-
didn’t know how much I missed you.
Thank you. And I thank you.

Cuz you build me up. You make me high.
When I feel your love, I wanna fly.
No matter what we’re goin’ through
there ain’t nothin’ we can’t do.

And I thank you.

My Face Time story from Des Moines

Des Moines, Iowa
April 6, 2009

Let me start by saying that I'm still in a dream state. I'm sure I will forget some things and I may repeat others. I'm also probably going to get things in the wrong order. Chalk it up to that "GAAAH!!!!" feeling I'm still experiencing. I normally consider myself a fairly competant writer, but I take absolutely NO responsibility for the drivel this blog could (and probably will) turn into. Forgive me now.

Shannon & Sarah arrived at my house Sunday night before the show. We stayed up all night laughing and giggling over captioned pictures, watching old NK videos and having a total slumber party. We made signs, tshirts and Sarah even made a special "Let's Get This" item (Shhh...ancient NK secret). It was great!

Monday morning came and we lazed around, deciding that the previous day's snow storm probably nixed any early-morning Face Time with the guys. Even Jon had tweeted the night before in Champaign that the crazy bus stalkers were freezing their butts off and he just didn't understand it. Jen & Missy arrived mid-morning and we spent the rest of the morning watching more old skool videos (making total fun of "Stay with Me, Baby") and getting ready for Stalkfest - Spring Edition. We finally got out of the house about noon-ish, grabbed a quick bite and headed to the arena.

Sarah drove with me, Shannon and my 12-yr old daughter, Shelby in her car. Jen & Missy took Jen's car. We decided to do a quick lap around the arena before committing ourselves to a parking space. As we came down the hill next to where the buses were parked, we looked over, scanning the area. I noticed him immediately but couldn't speak (Kinda like those dreams where you wanna run, but your feet don't work?). Shannon says "Umm guys?? That's Donnie."

I freak the hell out. TOTALLY. FREAK. OUT.

I'm pushing buttons on the door, yanking on the handle, shrieking in decibels that only dogs can hear, I'm certain (and I'm sure, the other girls can back me up)....."LEMME OUT!!!!!!!" Of course, in my crazed state, I COMPLETELY block out the fact that poor Sarah has never BEEN to Des Moines before and has NO idea where to go or what to do. (I'm SOOOOOOOO very very very sorry, Sarah! I still freakin' hart you to death!!) Shannon, Shelby and I finally release ourselves from the Chevy prison we're driving and Sarah says "What do I do???" So, as I'm running across the street, I holler back "Do a lap around the block & find parking!!" (Again....Sarah? I lurvey you. You know that, right??)

Shannon, Shelby and I tear across the street and I push Shelby into an empty spot by the gate just as Donnie gets there. He puts his arm around her, hugs her tight, cups her head against his chest and kisses the top of her head.
I. Freaking. MELT.

I work my way down the line to another empty spot just as Jen, Missy & Sarah get there (they managed to find parking a block up the street and Flo-Jo'd their butts down to the gates. Olympic trials organization? We'll be in touch!)

I manage to get in there for a quick hug too. He smelled *SO* damn good. Don't ask me what cologne he had on. I don't know and didn't recognize it right away. I just know it smelled clean, almost like he was fresh from the shower? (Gaaah...I know, right?!) His face was smooth, except his goatee and he gives GREAT hugs, even with just one arm.

He makes his way down the line and gets everybody hugs except Shannon (So sorry, girl!!). He disappears inside one of the buses. So...we're collectively gathering our thoughts. My daughter bursts into happy tears, and being the sap I am, I cry for her.

We are STOKED!!!!

So, the area clears a little bit, people come and go...a little while later, Joe comes out of the arena. Up until now, there really haven't been any screams or shrieks because rumor has it, Barrett & the baby are on the bus and we're assuming G's asleep. Well, Mr. McIntyre changes all that when he comes out and we let out a small scale of screams. Joe, being the jokester he is, does the shushing motion and we all quiet down. He then laughs and says "Nawww..just kiddin'. He's awake." and we all laugh and holler again. He laughs and gets on the bus.

In the meantime, Danny's dad and oldest daughter (?) come out and get on the bus.

Shortly thereafter, Danny came out with Vega and got on the bus. He gave waves and smiles to the crowd. Shelby again had tears in her eyes, as Danny's her favorite. She calmed down and after a while was having a good time waving & "talking" to Vega on the bus. We were all getting quite the giggle from her, actually. She kept peering out the driver's side window making the cutest faces. She was a trip. Loved that little girl half to death. LOL

Some more time went by and Earl, their bodyguard, comes out and gets on the Mac bus. He comes out a few minutes later and informs the crowd that they're coming out soon and that there are to be NO pictures taken of the baby when he comes out. Joe came out first with Duncan, the dog. Everybody "oooh'd and ahhhh'd" and Joe hollers out "Awwww, shaaaadupppp!" and then laughed. Rotten turd. LOL

Earlier, we'd noticed there was a stuffed animal on the dash of the Mac bus, and since nobody else knew what it was, I decided to ask Joe. Keep in mind, two weeks ago, I had some sinus/allergy issues that caused me to cough a lot. I ended up losing my voice before the Moline show. What little I could speak was lost the minute they came on stage that night. Four days later and I was *still* struggling. So when I holler out Joe's name, I know I must've sounded like a really raspy Tara Reid, at best, but at the very least, a very bad drag queen...LOL Anyway....

I get Joe's attention and ask him what stuffed animal is in the window. He turned and looked RIGHT AT ME (GAH!!! That Mac Stare!!) and said that it was "Road Dawg" and belonged to the bus driver. I know I said something else, but at this point in time, I don't remember what it was. Shannon hollered out that he was killing us in those jeans (yes, girls...it was THE Jeans). He just grinned and I swear the man shimmmied his butt at us.

Barrett & the baby came out shortly thereafter and the cameras went away (except for some girls down the row that Earl yelled at later...seriously? Shame on you!). Griffin had on an adorable little Boston Red Sox cap and Barrett was gorgeous as always. I told her what a wonderful woman she was and thanked her for being so tolerant of the psychosis we bring to their lives. I'm forever in awe at what a beautiful family they are. They all went inside and excitement died down for a little while again.

This is where things get fuzzy...so bear with me. LOL
At some point, somebody got off one of the buses and walked to the back. We didn't realize it until he came back and got back on the bus, but it was Jon. Sneaky little brat! Shortly thereafter, Donnie came back out with Jordan & Jon (again). Neither of them came over to the fence, though. Jordan did a little "paparazzi dance" and went inside and Donnie got on the BDB.

A little while later, Danny came out with the girls and they went inside. He gave waves again. :)

A few minutes after that, Donnie's bodyguard (Sorry, I can't remember his name) came out and said that he was gonna go down the line again and if you were out there before and got hugs, to please step back and let those come forward who hadn't met him before. We all stepped back, except for Shannon, but at our end of the line, it had thinned down considerably. We waited a few minutes and when nobody stepped forward, we went back against the gate. (and no, I don't feel the least bit guilty! LOL)

Donnie headed toward the front of the line and slowly worked his way down toward us. He looked at Shelby and she must've been shivering or something because he said "Little one, are you okay??" She muttered or nodded yes and he pulled her in close again, stroked her hair, kissed the top of her head and she said he even made a little "aww" sound as he hugged her. (Couldn't you just DIE?!)

He got to Sarah and apparently recognized her from before (even though she'd ditched her hat and zipped up her hoodie) and asked her "Didn't we meet before?" She just kinda nodded and grinned...he moved on (so sorry, Sarah! But hey?? DONNIEFRIGGINWAHLBERG recognized you!!!). He moved onto Manda...and apologized for kicking a pop can over and spilling on her shoes.

I have to stop for a moment and brag about the "Mamarazzi Skillz" my daughter has developed. For this having been her maiden voyage into full blown StalkFest, she delivered BIG. She managed to get this shot of Jon when he came off the Dark Knight bus.

At this point, I'm realizing that I have ONE shot at this...and I've heard that sometimes, if you ask for what you want, you get it. So Donnie gets to me and I can't even look him in the eye. I just look at his mouth (Sapmonster warning: that gorgeous, amazing, beautiful mouth) and ask him "Donnie, can I have a kiss??" He says, as he hugs me, "I can't lipkiss you, baby, you could get sick from me, but..." and he kissed me on the corner of my mouth and hugged me tight. *insert fangirl shrieks here* Before he pulls away entirely, I find myself petting his coat and saying "My God, it IS like buttah!!" He just laughs and squeezes my arm. He made his way through the rest of the line and disappeared inside. Shortly thereafter, Jon came back from behind the buses CrackBerrying & talking to a woman I didn't recognize and they, too, went inside.

Three hours had passed since we first whipped out of the car and tore across the street, but it all flew by SO quickly. A few quick words and a couple of hugs and our Face Time had ended. But those few moments, while mixed up and fuzzy, will remain in my mind forever.

I've been a fan for 20+ years and each concert I've been to, I've gotten closer and closer to being able to touch & talk to them. This experience was truly a dream come true. Such an overused phrase, but honestly? There's no other way to describe it. I always wondered what I would say if I ever met them. For two decades I've rehearsed clever commentary, witty banter and when they're right there in front of you, it all disappears. You find yourself clamoring for words at all, much less words that work together to form a cohesive thought. If I had to give advice to anyone wondering how to get Face Time, relax. It WILL happen, but you have to be committed to it. You can't stand at the curb and wait for them to come to you. You can't remain a wallflower and expect a conversation to happen. The guys are on a tight schedule (Donnie had several interviews he had to do before M&G time and it was only about an hour before that would've begun), so what you do get will be quick. Don't waste an opportunity or it will pass you by. Be aggressive, but not pushy. It's a delicate balance. Above all, remember that these guys owe us NOTHING. Even a wave from the buses is more than many of us will ever get. Take what you can get.

As far as the concert went, it too was amazing. In August 1989, I went to my first concert: NKOTB. Last Monday, I took my daughter to her first concert: NKOTB. Being able to share this experience with her was so much more awesome than even the hugs and kisses I got from Donnie. I watched that little girl's face light up again and again in wonderment of what was happening around her and I remember back to my first show. And I know my first concert experience wasn't nearly as cool as hers was. I didn't get "Face Time" or a backstage pass. And here my baby girl is getting hugs and cuddles from one of the men I've loved and adored for my entire life. It can only be described as surreal. She has memories that I worked my whole life to get. I'm still brought to tears by the fact that she got to experience this.

To the guys - I've rambled on and on here. I don't know that you've even read it, but if you have, I just want to tell you THANK YOU. I know you've said it to us again and again for our support through the years, but honestly, you deserve so much more than just "thanks" for what you've done. We were left in such a dark place in 1994 when you left the stage. Because of your reunion, your desire to return to music...to us...you've helped us reunite with friends we haven't talked to since high school. You've helped us become friends with new people all across the world (thanks to these boards). You've helped us share with our own children what you gave to us so many years ago. With all my heart and everything that's in me, I thank you so deeply for all of this and more. Thank you for your constant communication with us, the blogs, the vlogs, the Tweets, the shoutouts, the "eyesex" from the stage, all of it. YOU are amazing and I love you all so much.

Two weeks notice

Okay girls...we're two weeks away from Moline.

Two.

Fucking.

Weeks.

I'm so ready for this. You don't even KNOW! Facetime WILL be mine. Hell or high-water, Face Time WILL be mine. I've waited 21 years for this and I have a sneaking suspicion this will be my last chance for it....this year, that is. I know there's still summer tour. Beyond that, I guess we'll play it by ear. But I WILL get to meet them. I have to.

I said this back in '94, btw. And it didn't happen.

But I'm older.

Wiser.

More networked than before.

Donnie won't even know what hit him. Poor guy. I almost feel sorry for him. LOL

Let's GET this!!!!

How credible could she be, afterall.

It's like last call as the former New Kid on the Block spends an evening in the North End

By Meredith Goldstein, Globe Staff | January 12, 2006

I'm hugging Jordan Knight, a former member of New Kids on the Block, in front of Strega in the North End. It's a little after 9 p.m., and I'm pretty sure he's had way too much to drink (about eight double vodkas and beers, according to our bill).

He looks at the cab that's pulled over to take him home, and he whispers in my ear, ''Want to come?"

I don't know if he's kidding, but for a moment, it feels like it's 1989 all over again. My stomach is churning, and I'm living the dream I know I must have had when I was 11, that someday Jordan Knight would want to whisk me away in a taxi.

But let's rewind.

I get to Strega at about 6 p.m., where I'm supposed to meet Jordan Knight, his wife, and their friends for dinner. The assignment is to hang out with them on their double date, shadowing a typical night in the life of a former boy-band star from Dorchester who, at 35, is trying for a comeback with a new solo album, ''The Fix."

But when I get to the restaurant, Jordan's alone at the bar. The wives didn't come, he says. It's going to be just the three of us -- Jordan, his promoter/pal Michael Patt, and I. (And a photographer to capture the night.)

It starts off as expected. When Michael arrives, he and Jordan talk about music and their kids. Jordan's new single, ''Where Is Your Heart Tonight," is a ballad, and Mike is trying to market the song to easy-listening stations.

Mike asks what Jordan is drinking. He's already told me. ''It's something sweet, like a watered-down vanilla Bacardi thing," he says.

We talk about Jordan's son, Dante, a first-grader who likes his dad's Play Station Portable. Jordan and I talk about backup dancers and about how we think they're limiting.

Jordan has now downed a few of those vanilla Bacardi things, which I later find out are double vodkas, and he's mixing them with beer. I tell him to eat, but he's not interested.

''I ate a big meal at, like, 4," he says.

Then he begins to make serious faces, stands up, and leans against a wall. When I look confused, he tells me he's posing for the photographer I brought with me.

I tell Jordan to sit down, that the pictures from the evening are supposed to be candid.

''I'm just trying to get my man a good shot," he says, referring to the photographer and adjusting his scarf, which I assure him looks good.

Soon, Jordan runs out of the restaurant onto Hanover Street, where he poses under a tree. The photographer reluctantly follows.

When Jordan comes back to the table, I ask him to list the artists he'd most like to perform with, living or dead.

''James Brown. Beatles. Michael Jackson. Luther Vandross."

We talk more about music, and then he excuses himself. He yells from the bathroom, ''Heeeeeey. Heeeey," loud enough for other patrons to hear, and I get up to help. Turns out he wants the photographer to take pictures of him by the bathroom.

I say to Mike, ''He keeps posing."

''He's a poser," Mike says, smiling.

When Jordan returns, I tell him I like a song he released in 1999 called ''Give It To You." He tells me he came up with a dance for the track before he had even recorded it.

''I said, 'Let me come up with dance steps. . .' " he says. ''If I ever sing it, I'll have some hot [expletive]."

Jordan is soon recognized by a man at the restaurant who says, ''Jordan. Hello. I know you." The man starts to explain how they know each other but gives up when he sees Jordan's blank stare.

Moving on, Mike and I decide to talk about love, about Jordan's wife, whom Jordan met when he was about 12.

''I went to her family's house for meals," Jordan says. ''They loved me."

I tell him that marriage scares me, and Jordan, sipping another beer, looks like he's just noticed me for the first time. He puts his hand to my face and tries to push the hair out of my eyes, but his aim is off and he's hitting me in the eyebrow. I ask him how he knew he wanted to marry his wife and what makes a good partner.

He says, very slowly, ''OK. What's the question?"

I remind him.

He answers, ''You . . . want a wife . . . who is not . . . cheat-ful. . ." Then he makes a face at the camera.

Mike goes outside to flag a cab for Jordan. We follow him out and say our goodbyes, and Jordan whispers the aforementioned quick invite in my ear.

I squeal ''Jordan!" in a falsetto I forgot I had, pretending like it's not 2006, like he's not 35, and like we don't know better.

Interesting.....teaser, spoiler or major foul-up?

Danny blogged Sunday. It first went up on his MySpace page:
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to say thank you to all our UK, Irish, Scottish and German fans for making our European tour so special. You guys are making us feel right at home. We have been able to let loose and give you guys some shows I will never forget. After 17-18 years it is amazing the support you guys have shown. I love all of you.
And to everyone back home in America, we can’t wait for March 7th. We are starting a new leg to our North American tour. Also be on the look out for our new video for “2 in the morning”. Lets make this one a big hit by calling the radio stations and hitting up VH1. This song has always been one of my favorites and I have been waiting for the release. Lets make a big push into the summer. 2am, the spring tour, the cruise, and then the all new summer tour. I still catch myself in disbelief. I am so grateful to all of you and lets keep this ride going.

All my love
Danny

Today, it appeared on NKOTB.com:

Do you see what's missing between Sunday and today?

I do.
and then the all new summer tour.

Was it a teaser?

Was it a spoiler?

Or did somebody fuck up?

But, I've never done this kinda thing before!

With the development of the internet came the ability to buy tickets online. Easy peasie clicks and you're the proud owner of great tickets to the concert of your choice.

I'm not sure exactly what it was that inspired me to get in touch with my friend Syd, but when I heard NK tickets were going on sale I immediately IM'd him and asked him about his "connections" at Wells. I saw the great pictures he got from the Slipknot show and was definitely interested in getting decent seats for the NK show, too. He told me, however, that he has no "connections," he just gets in line early for tickets and usually gets whatever he wants. Next thing I know, I've decided that instead of sleeping in my own warm bed Friday night and doing that easy peasie click thing Saturday morning, I was going to sleep in front of WF arena instead. I checked with Nate and he was cool with it, so the planning began. Sean wanted to come with, so off we went Friday night.

After a hearty meal, Sean and I grabbed our sleeping bags, mp3 players and warmest clothes and headed to DSM. Syd was already in line and his girlfriend Anna was on her way. Another guy and his teenage son came up just a few minutes after we got there. Second in line. SWEET!!

There'd been a hockey game, so we were waiting inside the breezeway (between the two doors). Unfortunately though, some guy with a lanyard on a power trip told us we'd have to take the party outside. Damn! Out we trudged...the first hour went pretty non-eventfully. Anna had joined us by this point and we sat and chatted for a bit. Sean was a trooper and didn't complain too much about the cold - no worse than I had, at least.

About 11:30 or 12, a hockey player and his girlfriend came out and one of us happened to sneakily grab the door before it could shut behind them. Sean had to go to the bathroom, so he went in and walked toward the bathrooms, but a janitor stopped him. While he didn't tell him to leave, he did tell him not to follow him (in a creepy Old-Mr.-Jenkins-if-it-weren't-for-you-meddling-kids sorta voice, I might add). So...Sean came back out, but we wedged a hat in the door so we could get in later, after we knew everybody'd left for the night. Yes, yes, I know how WRONG this is...but I also know how freakin' COLD it was.

As downtown Des Moines quieted down for the night, we watched people walk back to their cars from the bars...we cracked open the little hand warmers and stuffed them in our gloves, shirts, collars and hats...we told stories of concerts past and honestly...had a GREAT time, despite the cold. Syd gave up the first ghost about 1:30 or so and he and Sean took a trip to QT and McDonald's. When they got back, Anna'd had enough so she went home for a few hours. She was absolutely exhausted. About an hour later, Sean and I finally gave up the fight and decided to make a 3am trip to McD's and QT for bathroom and food. The guy and his son had also retired to their van for a little while to warm up.

When we got back (bellies full of McNuggets & fries, I might add), we decided that it was time to migrate inside. Slowly and stealthily, we crept inside the breezeway, keeping close to the outer walls to hopefully elude the security cameras for a while. We managed to do just that. We were so grateful for heat and block from the wind. We didn't care that we were breaking the law. We just knew we were finally not shivering. As time went on, people started to join us...two by two, the breezeway began to fill up. Finally, around 6:00ish, our final "illegal immigrants" joined us...and shortly thereafter, our cover was blown.

Shit.

We all grimaced as a WF employee made his way down the stairs. We were dreading having to go back out into the cold with still almost 4 hours to go. Although me having some cool air around me so I didn't strangle the NK-fan-wannabe who claimed to have been "waiting for this moment for 21 years" probably wouldn't have been a bad idea by that point. The guy was apparently just a peon because he didn't kick us out...just checked the doors after verifying with security that we could be in there. Apparently they didn't want to tangle with kicking twelve of us out into the cold. He bid us happy ticket hunting and made his way back up the stairs.

Ahh yes....the wannabe fan. I knew you'd ask me about that.

This snarky, eavesdropping little snot pissed me off from the get-go. She walked in like she owned the damn place about 3:30 am. First off...don't fuck with me at 3 in the morning. Secondly, don't fuck with my boys at 3 in the morning. So, she's been there only a few minutes before she starts talking about going to the show. Blah blah. Don't care. Then she starts spoutin' off shit about seating for the arena and sound checks and the more she talked, the more I'm thinkin either she's Donnie's fuckin' sister and has insider information.....or she's a complete fucktard without a brain cell in her head. It was at this time that Syd and I had a twin-brain-power moment and texted each other at EXACTLY the same time. He says "What's up with her?" and I tell him "This chick's fullashit. She doesn't know what she's talking about.". Our phones beeped at exactly the same moment. I cracked up.

She's an eavesdropper..which just pisses me right the hell off. So, she's eavesdropping on my conversation with my buddy (and now, my personal savior) Syd about which sections we're going to request when we get to the ticket window, etc...and she pipes up....why aren't you just asking for first available on the floor?

I said "Because you're not going to get anything closer than row 21 and I'm not going to do that when I can get the first or second row next to the stage in the lower bowl." And she starts arguing with me about how it doesn't MATTER if it's some fan club or not...."state law prohibits...." blah blah fuckity blah. I said, "Umm....are you ON nkotb.com AT ALL?" She said "Well yeah, duh. I'm a fan. I've been there a lot."

It's at this point in time I realize that she's NOT Donnie's sister.

So I tell her in the MOST diplofuckingmatic way possible that she's obviously not aware that a company called "I Love All Access" has already bought the first twenty rows for VIP seating. She starts arguing with me again and by now, I'm rolling my eyes and taking a deep breath to keep from killing her. I responded with "Well, obviously you know much more than I do, so I'll request my section and just hope for the best."

Okay...so later on...the heat starts to kick up a little bit as the sun comes up (we're in a glass lobby and the heat's on....we're starting to get warm) so I take off my coat. I'd worn my turtleneck under my old skool black NK tshirt with the street sign and neon foot prints on it. And she starts fucking LAUGHING at me.
"My God, where'd you GET that thing?"
I said "MusicLand in 1990...why?"
She says "Wow, you're not a fan. You're fucking obsessed."
Even Sean giggled and said "you're so dead, man."
She said "Well, I mean you know all the songs, you have 20 year old tshirts...I mean, that's just crazy."
About that time, Nate calls me. His ringtone is "I'll Be Loving You Forever." And lil Miss Know-It-All pipes up "OMG, I forgot they even DID that song!!"
I looked at her and said "Honey...can you even legally buy a beer? Cuz you're done. Seriously. You're done."

I *hate* people who think they know everything when clearly, they couldn't fill up a paper plate with the knowledge they truly possess. This chick had my nerves on end when she walked in the door. I found GREAT pleasure in knowing her request for "best available" seats got her somewhere past row 20 on the floor.

Okay....that little snippet's done.

About 9am, they finally start setting up the barricade thingie to form rows for the ticket windows and we line up. Syd's telling us the protocol for what to do and it dawns on me. I'm FIRST in line for my window. HOLY crap. I've NEVER been first in line for ANYTHING like this!! I tell the guy which section I want...and he finds me 8 seats in the FIRST row of section 103.

GAH!! RIGHTBYTHEFUCKINGSTAGEOMG!

I hand him my CC and tell him to snap those baby's up. He swipes the card and starts processing the transaction. He gets a puzzled look and swipes it again. Hmm...He says "Let me try manually entering the card number." What the HELL?? STILL no good. OMG. What the fuck is going on???? I just transferred money to the account yesterday to make sure there was enough for the tickets!!!! I yell for Syd....I'm PANICKING.

It finally dawns on me....it's a new CC. I didn't activate it. Mother. Fuck. Syd laughs at me, but, bless his heart, put the tickets on his card for me.

So...after nearly freezing my ass off outside for almost six hours, nearly murdering a wanna-be fan and then having a freakin' CORONARY when my payment method doesn't work, I am finally the proud owner of FIVE tickets for the Des Moines NKOTB show in April.

I immediately call my girls (Jen and Sarah - who is actually flying out here the day before the concert from Washington to go with us) and tell them where we're sitting. They're THRILLED!!!! Jen also relays to me the information for our Moline concert on the 2nd. Again..section 103. A little farther up, but still VERY very good seats!! I tell Shelby the good news and she's thrilled too. She can hardly believe it's happening! I finally get home around noon and update my MySpace and Facebook statuses to reflect the killer seats we got for the shows. Kimmi comments "ummm....HOW killer?" Now, she'd already decided that she was ONLY coming to Iowa for the Moline show on Thursday because with her travel plans this year, she just couldn't stay for Monday's show, too. So I tell her where the seats are and tell her I can still get a ticket for her in our section if she wants to go, but she needs to let me know ASAP. She immediately responded, and after a little bit of deliberation, she said "YES. I'm in!!"

So....not only do I get to attend TWO shows this spring with three of my best friends, I get to share it with my daughter, too. August 1989 was my first real concert - NKOTB at the Iowa State Fair. This year...twenty years later, will be Shelby's first concert - NKOTB at Wells Fargo Arena. I'm so thrilled I can hardly stand it!!!!

Operation Squirrel (Jon's Blog)

Greetings from one of the best cities in the world! Just enjoyed a day
off in London. Can we just stay here? I’m getting so tired of packing
and unpacking everyday. Its all your fault, but I thank you for this
one misery I have to suffer (LOL). Watson got sent home on the first
plane to America this morning. I found his behavior to be a bit erratic
lately. I hear he was the cause of our continued economic downfall
Monday morning. The majority of you were not up to full working
capabilities due to staying up half the night waiting for some video to
be posted on the web. I wasn’t at that show and haven’t seen the video.
I did hear something about his a** being all over YouTube though.
Hopefully some upcoming time off will do him good. He told me he is
feeling extremely tired and home sick. The cold and rainy weather,
constant air travel, and being in a different time zone is sure taking
its toll on the poor guy! We all now he is no spring chicken these days
and damp weather is hard on the arthritis! Good thing he loves what he
does, so he will be just fine! In the mean time, I am here by myself
and will fill in for him during his absence. He said he can’t wait to
join me again sometime soon. I’m not sure when he will be back because
he shows up at really random times. He said something about a cruise in
May, not sure if he was talking about the cruise that I will be on with
some of you……I guess we will have to wait and see!

The first step is admitting there's a problem.

Or so they tell me.

I wouldn't know, as I'm not in rehab.

I have realized, however, that I do have some serious addictions. I've developed a drug habit. Because I am *SO* addicted to New Kids, it's only fitting that they have developed nicknames related to addiction-causing materials.

Jonathan is exactly my brand of Heroin. Aptly named because of his immediate effects on me - heightened body temperature, flushed skin, breathlessness and clouded mental function. The most addictive of all New Kids drugs, Heroin is also the most dangerous...much like those quiet people you have to watch out for!

Joe is Crack. Let's face it - he's HOT and I want more and more of him with every hit. Not to mention, Crack causes my heart to race and, like Heroin, my body temperature to rise. Crack is also fairly cheap, as drugs go, and you saw Joe's blog about being too cheap to pay for delivery on his Christmas tree. Sooner or later, though...Crack can hurt my heart. *coughcoughBARRETTcoughcough* I must be careful.

Jordan is Pot. One of the most recreational drugs, Pot can be found to cause sleeplessness and, with long-term use, difficulty breathing. It's also been reported that those using Pot tend to miss more work than those who don't. (You saw my blog about work...you know where this is going!) Pot's also a drug I could live without if I absolutely had to..but he it's one that's usually up for a good time if you don't have anything better to do.

Donnie is Ecstasy...or X as it's termed in the party world. X is used to calm my nerves, and heighten my sexual awareness (sound like anybody we know?). Like the other drugs, a rise in body temperature usually comes with X - along with teeth clenching, blurred vision, sweating and fainting. Then, of course, there's also the confusion, sleep problems and constant cravings. Ahh yes...I love me some X.

Danny is Ginseng. Being the health-nut of the group, he's inspired me to come back to a more holistic high. Increasing my mental awareness, Ginseng is a refreshing retreat from the other drugs who make my mind race from one thought to another. He It is something that restores my body, healing and relaxing the tension I feel. Although typically a very healthy addition, it can sometimes cause nervousness and excitability. Overall, he's it's well worth the risk.

Like any drug...excessive use can destroy lives. I have to be very careful to make sure my addictions don't override my everyday life. Unlike most addictions, though...I don't want to be cured of this one. No 12-step programs here, despite their talk of "Step by Step" in the 90's. I want nothing to do with quitting these Drugs...as if I stand a chance at a cure, anyway!

I love my little addictions!

**Editor's note: The author of this blog is not and has never used any type of illegal substance, much less been addicted to any. This blog was written tongue-in-cheek, so please take it in the context it was intended.**

Happy New Year from Jon

From NKOTB.com

Happy New Year to you! Where does the time go? I can’t believe It was one year ago that Jordan and I left home and went to stay with Donnie to begin planning for our reunion! I hope this year was as great for you as It was for me and the rest of the New Kids. It has been so much fun traveling all over North America. This Is the best country ever. I am glad I got to see It all over again.

I survived the trauma of turning forty……. of course I’ll still lie about my age. I’ve been doing It for so long I can’t stop now. I had the best birthday ever. Sitting around the Four Seasons In Punta Mita, Mexico with a small group of friends. This hotel Is one of the best if you want to get away from It all and relax. It did take me a good three days to let go and be able to enjoy myself. I’m never one to sit around and do nothing but I was so ready to do just that. Went snorkeling off the coast on a tiny island wildlife refuge. The water was a bit murky the day we all went. It makes It kind of creepy when you can’t see far into the distance. At one point I saw some large black shadows circling beneath us. Convinced it was a school of sharks. I told the people in our group that there are some cool fish in the direction of the shadows. Hey, I didn’t know these people and I’d rather watch them become dinner and not my friends. Swimming back to the boat we found out it was a school of stingrays and not some hungry sharks. These things were amazing, they were as big as I. We also had the opportunity of coming across a huge sea lion asleep on the beach.

Amazing sights… amazing times… amazing food… amazing service…amazing friends!

So here I am, back out in Los Angeles. Although it’s not snowing like back home, it’s freezing cold! I guess the warm weather in Mexico spoiled me. We are getting ready to film our third video next week, than off to Europe for another go round. It has been so great to have this time off. I got to go back to work for a few days and experience what I’ve been missing. As much as I love doing the New Kids thing I am itching to get back to my company. If only I could work during the day and commute to our concerts every night I would have the best of both worlds. That is impossible as we all know, so for now my main focus will remain with you!

Looking forward to seeing you all again this spring and summer.

Jon
